The Kaveri engine is an indigenous afterburning turbofan project developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a laboratory of DRDO based in Bengaluru. It was originally intended to power the HAL Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. Although the original Kaveri did not meet the thrust requirements for the Tejas, the project has been revived for use in unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) like the Ghatak. The engine represents a key step toward India's self-reliance in aero-engine technology, a critical strategic capability.
