Microbodies are small, membrane-bound cytoplasmic organelles such as peroxisomes and glyoxysomes found in both plant and animal cells. They contain various enzymes, particularly oxidative enzymes like catalase and oxidases that participate in metabolic reactions such as the breakdown of fatty acids (beta-oxidation), photorespiration in plants, and detoxification of hydrogen peroxide. They are not membrane fragments, acidic fluid sacs (that would be lysosomes/vacuoles), or repositories of waste metabolites.
