The normal systolic blood pressure in healthy adult human beings is approximately 120 mm of Hg. Systolic pressure represents the maximum arterial pressure during the contraction (systole) of the left ventricle of the heart, when blood is pumped into the aorta. The normal diastolic pressure (during relaxation of the ventricles) is about 80 mm of Hg. Hence, the normal blood pressure is expressed as 120/80 mm Hg. A persistent reading above 140/90 mm Hg is considered hypertension, while below 90/60 mm Hg is considered hypotension.
