Water gas is an industrial fuel gas produced by passing steam over red-hot coke at temperatures around 1000°C. The reaction is C + H2O → CO + H2. It is a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). Water gas is also called synthesis gas (syngas) and is used as a fuel and as a feedstock in chemical industries for producing ammonia, methanol, and other chemicals.
