When assessing learners' understanding of a poem, the appropriate elements are poetic devices (metaphor, simile, alliteration, etc.), theme/meaning, and vocabulary/word meanings used in the poem. Grammar is NOT a recommended element for assessing a poem, because poetry often deliberately breaks grammatical rules (poetic licence) for effect.
