Rajaraja I (985-1014 CE) maintained close commercial and diplomatic relations with the Sailendra kingdom of Sri Vijaya (Sumatra). On the request of the Sailendra ruler Sri Mara Vijayottungavarman, Rajaraja I permitted and encouraged the construction of a Buddhist Vihara at Nagapattinam (Negapatnam). This monastery, later called the Chudamani Vihara, is recorded in the Larger Leiden Plates copper-plate inscription.
