Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army of independent India, taking over from General Sir Francis Robert Roy Bucher on 15 January 1949. This day is celebrated annually as Army Day in India. Cariappa led the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 and was later conferred the rank of Field Marshal in 1986. K. S. Rajendrasinhji succeeded him as the second Indian C-in-C in 1953.
