All three vehicle types — full battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), and fuel cell-electric hybrids — qualify as alternative powertrain vehicles because none relies solely on internal combustion of petroleum fuels. They replace or substantially reduce the conventional drivetrain, cutting tailpipe emissions at the point of use.
BEVs store energy in electrochemical cells and are propelled entirely by electric motors. India's FAME scheme and the PM e-DRIVE initiative incentivise BEV adoption across two-wheelers, buses, and passenger cars, targeting reduced urban air pollution and oil import dependence.
FCEVs generate electricity onboard through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour. India's National Green Hydrogen Mission positions green hydrogen as a long-term fuel for heavy transport, where battery weight and range constraints are prohibitive.
These vehicles combine a fuel cell stack with a battery buffer, optimising energy recovery during braking and smoothing power delivery. They offer greater operational flexibility than pure FCEVs and are particularly suited to buses and freight vehicles requiring sustained high loads.
Scaling all three technologies demands parallel investment in charging networks, hydrogen refuelling stations, and grid decarbonisation. Regulatory harmonisation on safety standards, interoperability, and end-of-life battery management remains an unresolved policy gap.
Treating all three configurations as legitimate alternative powertrains allows policymakers to pursue a technology-neutral transition strategy — matching each vehicle type to appropriate use cases rather than prematurely concentrating incentives on a single pathway.
