India's industrial corridor programme represents a strategic shift from dispersed industrialisation to spatially concentrated, infrastructure-led growth, linking major economic nodes across multiple states through integrated logistics and manufacturing ecosystems.
Industrial corridors are planned along dedicated freight corridors, enabling industries to leverage reduced logistics costs. The Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) traverses Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, making it the most expansive. The Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) connects Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, targeting electronics and auto-component sectors.
The Amritsar–Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) aligns with the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, passing through Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. It is designed to industrialise the relatively underdeveloped eastern belt, addressing regional imbalances in manufacturing output.
Each corridor is managed through a Special Purpose Vehicle involving central and state governments, with the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation providing overarching coordination. Land acquisition, utility provisioning, and inter-state regulatory harmonisation remain persistent implementation bottlenecks.
Corridors are expected to generate employment, attract foreign direct investment, and build export competitiveness. However, uneven progress across nodes—with greenfield smart cities lagging behind logistics infrastructure—signals a need for stronger project-monitoring mechanisms and demand-side industrial policy.
Industrial corridors can rebalance India's economic geography only if physical infrastructure investment is matched by regulatory simplification, skilled workforce development, and genuine inter-state coordination—converting spatial proximity into productive agglomeration.
