Vilom shabd (विलोम शब्द), also called viparitarthak shabd (विपरीतार्थक शब्द), are words that carry meanings directly opposite to a given word. Think of them as the flip side of a coin — if one face says "light," the other says "dark."
Here is the key distinction you must lock in before the exam: a vilom shabd is not just "different" from the original word — it must be the direct semantic opposite. This is where most students drop marks. The word "ठंडा" (cold) and "गर्म" (hot) are vilom. But "ठंडा" and "सूखा" (dry) are neither vilom nor synonyms — they are simply unrelated. The exam loves to slip in unrelated words and near-synonyms disguised as options.
A practical analogy: imagine a number line. Zero is in the centre. +5 and -5 are true opposites — same distance, opposite direction. A word like "lukewarm" is not the vilom of "hot" — it is just closer to the centre. True vilom must sit at the opposite extreme on the same semantic axis.
In Hindi grammar, vilom shabd are created in two main ways:
आदर → अनादर, प्राप्त → अप्राप्त, सम → विषम.रात → दिन, मित्र → शत्रु, जीवन → मृत्यु.For Bihar Police Constable, the questions tend to be direct: "What is the vilom of word X?" or "Which of the following is NOT a valid vilom pair?" The second type is trickier and has appeared in actual papers, because it forces you to distinguish vilom from paryayvachi (synonyms) — a trap the paper-setters love.
This is the most rule-driven category and gives you the fastest gains in the exam hall. Learn the prefix pattern, and you can handle hundreds of words without memorising each pair separately.
Common prefixes that create antonyms:
| Prefix | Function | Example | |---|---|---| | अ / अन् | negation | प्राप्त → अप्राप्त, आदर → अनादर | | वि | reversal/opposition | राग → विराग, श्वास → निःश्वास | | नि / निः | absence | सहाय → निःसहाय, शुल्क → निःशुल्क | | कु | bad/opposite quality | मार्ग → कुमार्ग, रूप → कुरूप | | दुस् / दुर् | difficult/bad | गम → दुर्गम, लभ → दुर्लभ |
Look — when you see a word like "सुलभ" on the paper, do not just blank out. The prefix "सु" signals "easy/good." The opposite is "दुर्लभ" (rare/difficult). You are reading the prefix and flipping it, not memorising from scratch.
These require direct memorisation, but grouping by topic reduces the load considerably.
Nature / Time / State:
Social / Moral concepts (high-frequency in police exams):
Relationship terms:
The Bihar Police paper has directly tested this. Here is the rule stated plainly:
Paryayvachi (पर्यायवाची) = same meaning, different word. Example: मित्र = दोस्त = सखा = बंधु.
Vilom (विलोम) = opposite meaning. Example: मित्र ↔ शत्रु.
If the question shows you the pair मित्र–दोस्त and asks you to identify the "wrong vilom pair," the answer is that pair — because they are synonyms, not antonyms. This exact trap appeared in a 2014 paper (see PYQs below).
Not every "different" word is a vilom. There are three relationships:
सुख ↔ दुखसुख and तटस्थ (neutral) are not vilomसुख and नीला share no oppositionA key group that trips students: words that look like antonyms but are actually near-synonyms. अप्राप्य (unattainable) and दुष्प्राप्य (hard to attain) both mean roughly the same thing — they are NOT vilom of each other.
When you spot a word starting with a positive prefix (सु, स, आ, सम, प्र), immediately ask: what is the negative/reversing prefix for this root?
Micro-example: "समान" — prefix "सम" (equal). Flip: "विषम" (unequal). No separate memorisation needed.
Another: "सुलभ" → flip "सु" to "दुर्" → "दुर्लभ."
Standard memorisation approach: memorise 2 words as a pair. Prefix-flip approach: memorise 1 prefix rule that handles 20+ pairs. That is a 20x reduction in memory load for this category.
When the question asks which pair is NOT a valid vilom yugm (युग्म), scan the options for pairs where both words mean the same thing (paryayvachi) or both mean something negative (like "दुष्प्राप्य" and "अप्राप्य").
Micro-example: Options include मित्र–दोस्त and मित्र–शत्रु. Ask: do both words in the pair pull in opposite directions? मित्र–दोस्त both mean "friend" — same direction, not opposite. Eliminate immediately.
Step count: standard reading-through approach takes 4 steps (read all options, think about each). This trap-detector takes 1 step — look for the pair where both words sit on the same side of the semantic axis.
For abstract nouns and adjectives where you are unsure of the antonym, try attaching "अ" or "अन्" as a prefix first before considering complex alternatives.
Micro-example: You see "उचित" and cannot recall the vilom. Try: अनुचित — does it make a Hindi word meaning the opposite? Yes. Done.
Works for: उचित→अनुचित, आवश्यक→अनावश्यक, अपेक्षित→अनपेक्षित, आदर→अनादर.
Standard approach: 30 seconds of searching memory. This approach: 5-second prefix test. Use it as a first attempt before trying anything else.
Before confirming an answer, ask one question: are both words measuring the same quality in opposite directions?
Micro-example: Is रात–दिन a valid vilom? Both are on the "time of day" axis — one is the maximum darkness period, the other maximum light. Opposite ends, same axis. Valid.
Is रात–नीला a valid vilom? Night and the colour blue — completely different axes. Not a vilom. This eliminates nonsense distractors in 3 seconds without deep linguistic analysis.
Alphabetical word lists are how textbooks present vilom — that is the wrong way to memorise them for exams. Group by domain instead.
Micro-example: Group "legal/moral" words together: न्याय↔अन्याय, सत्य↔असत्य, दंड↔पुरस्कार, अपराध↔पुण्य. When the exam asks about one word in this cluster, the domain context activates the others.
Standard alphabetical rote: individual retrieval, higher failure rate under pressure. Domain grouping: context-cued retrieval, faster and more reliable. Estimated revision time saving: 40% fewer revision cycles needed to retain the same number of pairs.
When a vilom shabd question appears in the exam hall, run this decision path:
Step 1 — Identify question type. Is it "find the vilom" (single answer) or "find the incorrect/correct vilom pair" (pair evaluation)?
Step 2 — For "find the vilom": Check if the base word has a known prefix. If yes, apply the prefix-flip trick. If no prefix, retrieve the domain group the word belongs to and pick the word at the opposite end.
Step 3 — For "pair evaluation": Check each option pair. Ask: are both words on the same semantic axis but at opposite ends? If yes, it is a valid vilom. If both words mean the same thing (synonyms), it is a wrong pair. If both are negative-leaning or both are positive-leaning, it is a wrong pair.
Step 4 — Eliminate with confidence. If an option contains a word that is unrelated to the base word's domain, eliminate it immediately without overthinking.
Step 5 — Cross-check the final answer by mentally substituting it into a sentence. If the sentence flips meaning, you have the correct vilom.
Target time per question: 20-30 seconds.
Why this question: Direct vilom identification — the most common format. Tests whether you know that "आदर" forms its antonym via the "अन्" prefix, not through an unrelated word.
Solving path: The word "आदर" means respect. The options include "प्रेम" (love), "मित्रता" (friendship), "मान" (honour), and "अनादर" (disrespect). Apply the prefix-flip check first: "अन्" + "आदर" = "अनादर." This is a real Hindi word meaning disrespect. The other three options are positive-meaning words — they are not opposites of "आदर" at all, not even partial ones. Lock in "अनादर."
Why this question: This is the classic paryayvachi-masquerading-as-vilom trap. The 2014 paper used it directly. If you can identify why "मित्र–दोस्त" is wrong, you have cracked the single most common trap in this topic.
Solving path: The question asks which pair is NOT a valid anulom-vilom yugm (antonym pair). Run the semantic axis check on each option. "मिश्रित–अमिश्रित": prefix "अ" gives the negation — mixed vs. unmixed. Valid vilom. "मुख्य–गौण": main/primary vs. secondary/minor. These sit at opposite ends of an importance axis. Valid vilom. "मित्र–दोस्त": both mean friend. Same direction, same meaning. This is a paryayvachi pair, not a vilom pair. Answer confirmed.
Why this question: The counterpart to the previous one — now you must find the correct pair. Tests whether you can distinguish valid vilom from near-synonym pairs that look similar.
Solving path: "प्रीति–प्रेम" — both mean love/affection. Paryayvachi, not vilom. Eliminate. "अप्राप्य–दुष्प्राप्य" — both mean difficult/impossible to obtain. Near-synonyms on the same (negative) side. Eliminate. "प्राप्त–अप्राप्त" — "प्राप्त" means obtained/received, "अप्राप्त" means not obtained. The prefix "अ" creates direct negation. These sit at exactly opposite ends of the "attainment" axis. This is the valid vilom pair. The correct answer is option C.
Confusing paryayvachi with vilom. "मित्र" and "दोस्त" are both "friend" — they are synonyms. "मित्र" and "शत्रु" are antonyms. Students who have not explicitly practised pair-type questions frequently mark synonym pairs as antonym pairs.
Accepting near-opposites as true vilom. "अप्राप्य" (unattainable) and "दुष्प्राप्य" (hard to attain) both carry negative meaning and are on the same side of the axis. They are not vilom of each other. True vilom must be at opposite ends.
Picking an unrelated word because it "sounds different." "आदर" and "प्रेम" are very different words, but "different" does not mean "opposite." Stick to the semantic axis check.
Forgetting that the same root can have multiple valid prefixes that produce non-vilom results. "दुष्प्राप्य" and "अप्राप्य" are both formed by adding different negative prefixes to the same root — they end up as near-synonyms, not vilom. Prefix addition does not automatically guarantee a vilom.
Ignoring context for words with multiple meanings. "मान" can mean pride (in which case "अपमान" is its vilom) or measurement (in which case the context shifts entirely). On a single-answer question, pick the vilom of the most common, everyday meaning unless the sentence provides context.
Rushing through pair-evaluation questions. These require you to check every option, not just the first one that looks wrong. Students find one suspicious option and mark it without verifying the others — and sometimes there are two options that look like traps, but only one is the actual wrong vilom pair per the question's instruction.
