Spatial Reasoning is one of the most heavily tested areas in the AFCAT Military Aptitude Battery. It tests your ability to mentally rotate, fold, and visualise 3D objects from 2D drawings. Expect 10-15 questions covering paper folding, mirror images, water images, cube and dice problems, and figure rotation. This section directly tests pilot and navigator aptitude, so it carries more weight than it appears. Most errors come from rushing — a calm 20-30 seconds per question is ideal.

Mirror Images

A mirror image is the left-right flip of the original figure. Imagine holding the figure in front of a vertical mirror — the left side becomes right and the right becomes left. The top and bottom stay the same. For text or numbers, they appear reversed horizontally. This is the most frequently asked spatial type in AFCAT.

  • Vertical mirror: left and right swap, top and bottom stay fixed.
  • Horizontal mirror (water image): top and bottom swap, left and right stay fixed.
  • Letters like A, H, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y look the same in a mirror — called symmetric letters.
  • Digits 0, 1, 8 are horizontally symmetric. Watch out for 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 — they flip.

  • Water image = vertical flip (upside down), left-right stays the same.
  • Mirror image = horizontal flip (left-right reversed), up-down stays the same.
  • For text: in a water image, letters appear upside down but not reversed left to right.
  • Quick check: if the question mentions 'reflected in water' or 'seen from below', it is a water image.

Paper Folding and Punching

A square paper is folded one or more times and then a hole is punched. You must identify where the holes appear when the paper is completely unfolded. AFCAT typically shows 2 to 3 folds before punching. The key skill is tracing each fold in reverse order — unfold step by step.

  • Each fold doubles the number of holes when unfolded. One fold and one punch gives 2 holes; two folds give 4 holes.
  • Always unfold in reverse order: last fold opened first.
  • The hole is always symmetric about the fold line.
  • Mark the fold line mentally and reflect the punched dot across it at each unfold step.

Another common variant asks you to pick which option completes a pattern or series of figures. Treat the figure like a clock hand: 90 degrees clockwise moves the top to the right, 180 degrees flips it upside down, 270 clockwise is same as 90 anticlockwise.

  • 90 degrees clockwise: top goes to right, left goes to top, bottom goes to left, right goes to bottom.
  • 180 degrees: top goes to bottom, left goes to right — essentially upside down and reversed.

Cube and Dice Problems

A flat cross-shaped pattern (net) is folded into a cube and you must identify which faces are opposite each other or what the cube looks like from a given angle. AFCAT also asks: given two positions of a dice, find the number on a hidden face. The two main rules are the opposite face rule and the common face method.

  • In a standard dice: opposite faces sum to 7. So 1 opposite 6, 2 opposite 5, 3 opposite 4.
  • In AFCAT dice problems, faces may be custom-numbered — do not assume standard dice.

Embedded and Hidden Figures

You are shown a small figure and a larger complex drawing. You must find where the small figure is hidden inside the complex one. The hidden figure is always present in exactly the same shape and size — it is never rotated or resized in most AFCAT variants. Scan the complex figure systematically by tracing the outline of the small figure.

  • The embedded figure keeps the same orientation in standard AFCAT questions.
  • Scan by looking for one distinctive edge or angle of the small figure first.
  • Eliminate options by checking if all lines of the small figure match lines in the complex figure.
  • Do not spend more than 25 seconds — if unsure, move on and return.

  • Confusing mirror image with water image — mirror flips left-right, water flips up-down. Always re-read the question.
  • In paper folding, unfolding in the wrong order — always reverse the fold sequence, last fold first.
  • Assuming standard dice values (opposite faces sum to 7) when the question shows a custom-labelled dice — read the given positions carefully.
  • Rotating figures by the wrong direction — clockwise and anticlockwise are easy to mix under time pressure. Use your pen tip or finger to physically track the rotation.
