The questions ask you to find the missing term or the wrong term in a series. Difficulty is moderate — easier than PO level. A strong aspirant should solve all 5 in under 4 minutes. Arithmetic Series

In an arithmetic series, the difference between consecutive terms is constant. This constant is called the common difference (d). It can be positive (increasing series) or negative (decreasing series). This is the simplest type and appears frequently in easier sets.

  • Common difference d = Term2 minus Term1
  • Each term = previous term plus d
  • Example pattern: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19 — d is always 4
  • Negative d gives a decreasing series: 20, 15, 10, 5

Difference of Differences (Second Order Series)

Sometimes the differences between consecutive terms are not equal, but the differences of those differences are equal. This is called a second-order series. Always calculate two levels of difference when the first level is not constant. This is very common in IBPS Clerk.

  • Level 2: find differences of Level 1 values
  • If Level 2 is constant, you have a second-order arithmetic series

Square and Cube Based Series

Many series in IBPS Clerk are based on squares or cubes of natural numbers, sometimes with an addition or subtraction of a constant. Recognising perfect squares (1,4,9,16,25...) and cubes (1,8,27,64,125...) quickly is a core skill. Practice until you know squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15.

  • Pure square: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36
  • Square plus constant: 2, 5, 10, 17, 26 — these are n squared plus 1
  • Pure cube: 1, 8, 27, 64, 125

Multiplication and Addition Mixed Series

This is the trickiest and most common type in recent IBPS Clerk papers. The rule alternates or combines: multiply by a number then add a number, or add an increasing number at each step. There is no single formula — you need to spot the pattern by testing multiply and add combinations on the first two terms and verifying on the third.

  • Common pattern: x2+1, x2+1, x2+1 applied to each term
  • Another common: x1+1, x2+2, x3+3 — multiplier and adder both increase
  • Always verify your pattern on at least 3 consecutive terms before committing
  • If multiply does not work, try add then multiply
  • These series often look random at first glance — stay calm and test systematically

Wrong Term Series

In wrong term questions, all 5-6 terms are given and you must find the one that breaks the pattern. The approach is the same — identify the pattern using surrounding terms, then check which given term does not fit. These appear in IBPS Clerk Mains more than Prelims but do come occasionally in Prelims.

  • Identify the pattern from the majority of terms that fit
  • The wrong term is usually off by a small value — easy to confuse with correct
  • Check the wrong term against what the pattern predicts
