Synonyms and Antonyms

NDA regularly asks you to identify the word closest in meaning (synonym) or opposite in meaning (antonym) to an underlined word. The trap is that two options often look correct. Always check the shade of meaning, not just the dictionary meaning. A word like 'frugal' means careful with money, not completely without money — so 'miserly' is close but carries a negative shade, while 'frugal' is neutral.

• Focus on formal and literary adjectives — NDA loves words like candid, benevolent, verbose, obstinate
• Learn words in pairs — know the antonym whenever you learn a synonym
• Shade of meaning matters — aggressive vs assertive, frugal vs miserly, brave vs reckless
• Negative prefixes change meaning — im, un, dis, mal, mis — learn roots to decode unfamiliar words

One Word Substitution

A phrase is given and you must pick the single word that best replaces it. This tests vocabulary breadth. NDA frequently tests words from law, medicine, government, and military life. For example: 'one who cannot be corrected' = incorrigible. 'Fear of water' = hydrophobia. These words are predictable and repeat across years.

• Memorise category-wise: phobias, mania words, -cide words, -archy words, government terms
• Person-related words are most tested: misanthrope, philanthropist, egotist, sycophant, iconoclast

Fill in the Blanks — Vocabulary Based

A sentence with a blank is given, and you must choose the most appropriate word. This tests both meaning and usage in context. The key skill is understanding the tone and direction of the sentence. If the sentence says 'despite his wealth, he was ___', the blank needs a negative personality word like 'miserly' or 'arrogant' to complete the contrast.

• Look for contrast clues: but, although, despite, however signal an opposite idea in the blank
• Look for support clues: and, therefore, since signal a similar or logical continuation
• Eliminate options that do not fit grammatically (noun vs adjective mismatch)
• High-frequency NDA blank words: benevolent, diligent, verbose, reticent, prolific, ambiguous, notorious
• When stuck, use the process of elimination — remove clearly wrong options first
