Types of DI Sets You Will See

SBI PO uses five main formats: Bar Graph, Line Graph, Pie Chart, Table, and Caselet (paragraph-based DI). In Mains, mixed or combination sets appear — for example, a bar graph paired with a table for the same data. Caselets are the trickiest because you extract numbers from text before you even calculate. Recent SBI PO papers also feature 'missing data' tables where one cell is blank and you must find it from totals.

• Bar Graph: best for comparing categories across years or groups — read the scale carefully.
• Line Graph: used for trends over time — questions ask rate of change or highest growth.
• Pie Chart: always involves percentages — convert to actual values using the given total.
• Table: most calculation-heavy — questions can chain multiple rows and columns.
• Caselet: read twice before solving — underline numbers and their context immediately.

Speed Techniques for SBI PO Level DI

SBI PO gives roughly 1 to 1.2 minutes per question in Prelims. For DI, you should spend 30 seconds reading the set and then 45-60 seconds per question. The key is to avoid full long division — use approximation when options are at least 2-3 units apart, use fraction shortcuts for common percentages, and always scan all 5 questions before starting so you can reuse intermediate calculations.

• Read all 5 questions of the set first — you often calculate a value for Q1 that directly helps Q3.
• Mark approximate values on the graph/table with a mental note — saves re-reading.
• Use fraction equivalents: 12.5% = 1/8, 16.67% = 1/6, 33.33% = 1/3, 37.5% = 3/8.
• For percentage change, check if the difference is a simple fraction of the base.
• In mixed sets (bar + table), identify which chart answers which question before starting calculations.

Caselet DI — The SBI PO Exclusive Trap

Caselets appear almost every year in SBI PO Mains and are slowly entering Prelims too. A paragraph gives data about sales, population, income, or profit across entities or time periods. The challenge is that data is buried in sentences — not neatly in rows. Your first job is to convert the paragraph into a mini table. This takes 60-90 seconds but saves time on all 5 questions.

• Read the entire caselet once for context, then read again to extract numbers into a table.
• Underline: names of entities, years, numerical values, and relational words (twice as much, 40% more than).
• Draw a 2-row or 2-column mini table on your rough sheet immediately after reading.
• Watch for cumulative vs individual data — SBI PO often gives total and asks for individual.
• If a value is given as a ratio of another, mark it as unknown x and solve algebraically if needed.

Missing Data and Two-Variable Sets

SBI PO introduced a pattern where a table has one missing cell, and you find it using a given row total or column total. This is effectively a linear equation hidden inside DI. Another pattern: two separate data sources (like a table of income and a pie chart of expense distribution) must be combined to answer one question about profit or savings. Treat these as two-step problems.

• Missing data: write an equation using row or column total — find the unknown.
• Two-source sets: identify which source gives numerator info and which gives denominator.
• Do not assume missing data is zero — that is the most common error.
• In two-source sets, double-check units — one may be in thousands and another in lakhs.

• Reading the Y-axis scale wrong in bar graphs — SBI PO often uses non-zero or broken axes. Always check if the axis starts from 0.
• In pie charts, using the percentage directly in ratios without checking if the total is the same across both entities being compared.
• Confusing percentage point change with percentage change — a jump from 20% to 25% is 5 percentage points but 25% increase in the value.
• In caselet DI, missing the word 'remaining' or 'rest' — if 60% is given for two categories, the third is 40%, not some other number.
• Not approximating when you should — spending 90 seconds on exact division when options are 1200, 1800, 2400, 3000 (clearly far apart) wastes precious time.

• TAPBC rule for DI sets: Type (identify chart type), Axis (check scale and units), Purpose (read question before data), Base (note the total or reference value), Calculate (only now do the math).
• Caselet = Table in disguise. Your first action is always: paragraph to mini-table. No exceptions.
• Fraction Flash Card memory hook — 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 = 16.7%, 3/8 = 37.5%, 5/8 = 62.5%. These four catch most people off guard in Mains.
• Two-source sets rule: think of it as a fraction — one source is numerator info, other is denominator info. Find both before you divide.

• SBI PO Prelims typically has 3 DI sets of 5 questions each (15 questions total). Attempt the easiest set first — usually a simple bar graph or line graph. Leave caselet or mixed sets for later.
• SBI PO Mains has one dedicated DI and DS section worth 60 marks. DI alone accounts for roughly 20 marks. Mixed and caselet DI dominate here.
• SBI PO deliberately uses large ugly numbers (like 3,71,250 or 8.4%) to slow you down. Approximate aggressively — if options differ by more than 5%, approximation will give the right answer.
• In recent SBI PO papers (2023, 2022), two-table or bar-plus-table combination sets appeared at least once in Prelims. Practice these specifically — most coaching material only covers single-chart sets.
• Time benchmark: if you cannot solve a DI question in 75 seconds in Prelims, mark it and move on. Do not let one stubborn question cost you 3 others.
