Questions ask you to find the missing number, the wrong term, or the next term in a sequence. The series follow patterns like addition, subtraction, multiplication, squares, cubes, or mixed operations. Speed and pattern recognition are the key skills here.

Types of Number Series

Every series has a hidden rule. Your job is to find that rule within 30 to 45 seconds. SSC CHSL repeats a handful of patterns again and again. Learning to spot them by look and feel saves precious time.

  • Arithmetic Series: each term increases or decreases by a fixed number. Example: 3, 7, 11, 15 — add 4 each time.
  • Geometric Series: each term is multiplied or divided by a fixed number. Example: 2, 6, 18, 54 — multiply by 3.

  • Step 1 — Check differences first: subtract each term from the next. If differences are equal, it is arithmetic. If differences themselves increase by a fixed number, it is a second-order series.
  • Step 2 — Check ratios: divide each term by the previous one. If ratio is constant, it is geometric.
  • Step 3 — Check squares and cubes: quickly see if terms are near 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36 or 1, 8, 27, 64, 125. Often a constant is added or subtracted.
