Biology is a consistent scorer in SSC MTS GK section. Expect 3-5 questions per paper covering human body systems, diseases and their causes, nutrition and vitamins, plant biology basics, and cell structure. Questions are direct fact-based, not analytical. Knowing who-causes-what (virus/bacteria/deficiency) and which-vitamin-does-what can easily fetch you 3-4 marks in under 2 minutes.
Cell - The Basic Unit of Life
Every living thing is made of cells. The cell has a nucleus (brain of the cell), cytoplasm (fluid inside), and cell membrane (outer cover). Plant cells also have a cell wall and chloroplasts. The mitochondria is called the powerhouse of the cell because it produces energy (ATP). Robert Hooke first observed cells in 1665. The cell theory was given by Schleiden and Schwann.

Human Digestive System

The small intestine is the main site of digestion and absorption. The liver produces bile which helps digest fats. The large intestine absorbs water. The pancreas is both an endocrine and exocrine gland - it produces insulin and digestive enzymes.

Vitamins and Deficiency Diseases
Vitamins are essential nutrients our body cannot make on its own (mostly). They are either fat-soluble (A, D, E, K - remember ADEK) or water-soluble (B complex and C). Each vitamin deficiency causes a specific disease. These are direct one-line questions in SSC MTS - memorize the pairs.
- Vitamin A deficiency = Night blindness (cannot see in dim light)
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) deficiency = Beriberi (nerve/muscle weakness)
- Vitamin B12 deficiency = Pernicious anaemia
- Vitamin C deficiency = Scurvy (bleeding gums, weak immunity)
- Vitamin D deficiency = Rickets in children, Osteomalacia in adults (weak bones)

Diseases - Causes and Carriers
SSC MTS loves asking what causes a disease - is it a virus, bacteria, protozoa, or fungus. Also remember which diseases are spread by mosquitoes. Viral diseases cannot be treated by antibiotics. Bacterial diseases can. Remember: Antibiotics kill bacteria, NOT viruses - this itself is a common question.
- Viral diseases: Common cold, Influenza, Dengue, AIDS, Polio, Rabies, Chickenpox
- Bacterial diseases: TB (Tuberculosis), Cholera, Typhoid, Plague, Leprosy
- Protozoan diseases: Malaria (Plasmodium parasite), Amoebic dysentery, Kala-azar

Blood and Circulatory System
Human blood has four components: RBC (red blood cells carrying oxygen via hemoglobin), WBC (white blood cells that fight infection), platelets (help in clotting), and plasma (liquid part). The heart pumps blood - it has 4 chambers. Arteries carry blood away from heart; veins bring blood back. Blood groups follow ABO system. AB is universal recipient, O is universal donor.

Plants take in CO2 and release O2 during day (photosynthesis), but take in O2 and release CO2 during respiration (like animals). The phloem carries food; xylem carries water in plants.

Human Endocrine System - Glands and Hormones
Glands release hormones directly into the blood. These hormones control body functions. The pituitary gland is called the master gland because it controls other glands. Thyroid gland controls metabolism. Insulin from pancreas controls blood sugar. Adrenaline is the fight-or-flight hormone released in stress or danger.

⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Anopheles (Malaria) with Aedes (Dengue) mosquito - both are mosquitoes but different diseases. Remember: A for Anopheles = A for Malaria (Plasmodium Anopheles), Aedes = Dengue
- Mixing up Vitamin D and Vitamin K roles - D is for bones (Rickets/Osteomalacia), K is for Klooting (Clotting of blood)
- Thinking arteries always carry oxygenated blood - the Pulmonary Artery is the exception as it carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs
- Saying antibiotics cure viral fever or dengue - antibiotics only work on bacteria. A very common trick question in SSC papers
- Confusing Xylem and Phloem - many write xylem carries food. Remember: X for Xylem = X for water (water is xtra important for roots), Phloem = Food (both start with different letters, use Ph-Food trick)

- ADEK = Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). All others - B and C - are water soluble. Fat ADEK vitamins are stored in body fat.
- For vitamin deficiency diseases use: A=sightAll (Night blindness), B1=BeBeriberi, C=sCurvy, D=Deformed bones (Rickets), K=Kan't Klot (no clotting). Each letter reminds you of disease.
- DONOR = O blood group (universal Donor starts with D but O is the One for all). RECIPIENT = AB (AB = Accepts Both = universal recipient). This rhyme helps: O gives to All, AB takes from All.
- MAD = Mosquito-spread diseases: Malaria (Anopheles), Dengue (Aedes). Two diseases, two different mosquitoes - never mix them.
🎯 SSC MTS exam tips
- SSC MTS typically has 3-5 biology questions per paper, mostly from diseases, vitamins, and human body systems. These are pure memory-based - no calculation needed, just recall.
- Vitamin deficiency and disease-cause (virus vs bacteria vs mosquito) questions appear almost every year. Spend 80 percent of your biology prep time on these two areas alone.
- Questions are usually at recognition level - they give you a disease and ask the cause or vice versa. Example: Which mosquito spreads Dengue? or Deficiency of which vitamin causes Scurvy? Straightforward.
- Recent SSC MTS papers also asked about glands and hormones (especially insulin-diabetes link and pituitary as master gland) - this is an emerging pattern worth noting.
- Do not go deep into topics like genetics or evolution for SSC MTS - these rarely appear. Focus on human body, diseases, vitamins, and basic plant biology for maximum return on time invested.
