Why this topic matters · 8 min read
Indian Geography is one of the most reliable scoring areas in SSC MTS GK. Expect 3-5 questions per paper covering rivers, mountains, states, climate, soils, and physical features. Questions are mostly direct fact-based: longest river, highest peak, which state borders which country, which soil grows which crop. No deep analysis needed — pure recall wins here.

Physical Divisions of India

India is divided into 6 main physical regions: The Himalayan Mountains in the north, the Northern Plains (Indo-Gangetic Plain), the Peninsular Plateau (Deccan Plateau), the Coastal Plains (east and west), the Indian Desert (Thar Desert in Rajasthan), and the Islands (Andaman and Nicobar in Bay of Bengal, Lakshadweep in Arabian Sea). The Deccan Plateau is the largest plateau in India and is made of old hard rock called basalt in some parts.

  • Highest peak in India: Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) — K2 is in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir
  • Largest plain: Indo-Gangetic Plain — most fertile and densely populated region
  • Thar Desert lies mostly in Rajasthan, touches Gujarat and Punjab too
  • Andaman and Nicobar: Bay of Bengal — Lakshadweep: Arabian Sea
  • Deccan Plateau is bounded by Western Ghats (west) and Eastern Ghats (east)
  • Eastern Ghats are discontinuous; Western Ghats are continuous and taller

Major Rivers of India

Rivers are a hot topic in SSC MTS. India has two main river systems: Himalayan Rivers (perennial — flow throughout the year because they get glacier water) and Peninsular Rivers (seasonal — depend on monsoon). The Ganga is the longest river entirely within India. The Indus is longer but most of it flows through Pakistan. Rivers generally flow west to east and drain into the Bay of Bengal, except the Narmada and Tapi which flow east to west and drain into the Arabian Sea.

  • Longest river in India: Ganga (2,525 km)
  • Longest river in the world that flows through India: Indus (originates in Tibet)
  • Narmada and Tapi are exceptions — they flow west and fall into Arabian Sea
  • Godavari is called Dakshin Ganga (Ganga of the South) — longest peninsular river
  • River that forms the largest delta: Ganga-Brahmaputra (Sundarbans Delta)
  • Brahmaputra is called Tsangpo in Tibet and Jamuna in Bangladesh

Climate and Monsoon

India has a monsoon type of climate. The South-West Monsoon brings about 75-80% of India's total rainfall during June to September. It enters India from the Kerala coast around June 1 and covers the whole country by mid-July. The North-East Monsoon (retreating monsoon) brings rain to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during October-December. Mawsynram in Meghalaya is the wettest place in the world. Rajasthan receives the least rainfall.

  • Southwest Monsoon: June to September — most of India's rain
  • Northeast Monsoon: October to December — mainly Tamil Nadu and Andhra
  • Wettest place: Mawsynram, Meghalaya (also nearby Cherrapunji is famous)
  • Driest region: Thar Desert, Rajasthan
  • Loo is a hot dry wind blowing in North India in summer (May-June)
  • Western Disturbances bring winter rain to North India from the west

Soils of India

Different soils grow different crops — this is a favourite SSC MTS question type. There are 6 main soil types. Alluvial soil is the most widespread and fertile. Black soil (Regur) is best for cotton and is found mainly in Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Red soil is found in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh. Laterite soil is found in Kerala, Karnataka, and is good for tea and coffee. Desert soil is in Rajasthan.

  • Alluvial soil: Most fertile, found in Indo-Gangetic Plains, grows wheat and rice
  • Black soil (Regur): Best for cotton, found in Deccan Plateau / Maharashtra
  • Red soil: Found in Tamil Nadu, Andhra — grows millets and pulses
  • Laterite soil: Found in Kerala, Karnataka — good for tea, coffee, rubber
  • Desert soil: Rajasthan — poor in moisture, low fertility
  • Mountain soil: Found in Himalayan region — good for tea, fruits

States, Borders and Important Facts

India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories (after J&K reorganisation in 2019). Questions often ask which state borders which country, which is the largest or smallest state, and which state has the longest coastline. India shares land borders with 7 countries: Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Afghanistan (very short disputed border).

  • Largest state by area: Rajasthan — Smallest state by area: Goa
  • Largest state by population: Uttar Pradesh
  • Longest coastline: Gujarat (among states), followed by Andhra Pradesh
  • India's total land border: about 15,106 km — coastline: about 7,516 km
  • Only state bordering both China and Pakistan: Jammu and Kashmir (now UT)
  • Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya are surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides

National Parks and Biosphere Reserves

SSC MTS often asks which national park is in which state and which animal is associated with which park. Jim Corbett is the oldest national park in India (1936), located in Uttarakhand. Kaziranga in Assam is famous for one-horned rhinos. Sundarbans in West Bengal is the largest mangrove forest and famous for Royal Bengal Tigers. Gir in Gujarat is the only home of Asiatic Lions.

  • Oldest national park: Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand (1936)
  • One-horned Rhino: Kaziranga, Assam
  • Asiatic Lion: Gir, Gujarat — only wild habitat
  • Royal Bengal Tiger and Mangroves: Sundarbans, West Bengal
  • Snow Leopard is found in Himalayan states like Himachal, Uttarakhand
  • India has the largest number of tigers in the world — Project Tiger started in 1973
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
  • Confusing Kangchenjunga (highest peak in India) with K2 — K2 is the highest in the Karakoram range and lies in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, so it is NOT the highest peak within India's recognized territory.
  • Mixing up Mawsynram and Cherrapunji — both are in Meghalaya and very close. Mawsynram holds the current record for highest average annual rainfall, not Cherrapunji.
  • Thinking Narmada and Tapi flow east like most peninsular rivers — they uniquely flow WEST into the Arabian Sea through rift valleys.
  • Confusing Gujarat with Andhra Pradesh for longest coastline — Gujarat has the longest coastline among all states.
  • Forgetting that India now has 8 Union Territories (not 7) after the 2019 reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into two UTs: J&K and Ladakh.
🧠 Memory aids
  • SOIL TRICK — A Black Red Lady Dances on Mountains: Alluvial, Black, Red, Laterite, Desert, Mountain soils in order of importance.
  • Rivers flowing WEST: Name Tapi Narmada — N and T flow to the west coast. All others go east.
  • CHINA Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh Myanmar Pakistan Afghanistan — CNB BMP A — 7 land-bordering countries. Read clockwise from the north.
  • Gir has ONE lion left in wild (Asiatic), Kaziranga has ONE horn (rhino) — both are ONE-of-a-kind associations.
  • WEST Ghats are WET and continuous, EAST Ghats are drier and broken — W for Wet and Whole, E for Eroded and Exposed.
🎯 SSC MTS exam tips
  • SSC MTS GK questions on geography are mostly single-line fact recall — no map reading or diagram analysis. Focus on associations: park with state, soil with crop, river with origin.
  • River-related questions appear almost every year. Know the top 5 longest rivers, which rivers are perennial vs seasonal, and which rivers fall into Arabian Sea vs Bay of Bengal.
  • State-country border questions are common: which state touches Bangladesh, which touches Myanmar. Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal, Assam touch Bangladesh.
  • National parks and wildlife questions come in 1-2 questions per paper. The trio — Jim Corbett, Kaziranga, and Gir — appear very frequently.
  • Climate questions usually focus on monsoon entry point (Kerala in June), wettest place (Mawsynram), and local winds (Loo in North India). These are easy marks — do not skip them.
