How SSC MTS Tests Spelling

The most common format is: four words are given, one is correctly spelled (or one is wrongly spelled) — you must identify it. Sometimes the question asks you to find the misspelled word in a sentence. The words are usually everyday English words that look similar to their wrong versions. You rarely get very advanced vocabulary — it is the medium-level words that trick you.

• Format 3: Identify the misspelled word in a given sentence
• Words are of medium difficulty — not too simple, not too advanced
• 1 to 2 questions per paper, easy marks if you have practiced

IE vs EI Rule

A classic confusion is when to write IE and when to write EI. The famous rule is: I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh. So words like believe, achieve, piece use IE. Words like receive, ceiling, deceive use EI because C comes before them.

• I before E: believe, achieve, piece, relief, grief, niece
• Except after C: receive, deceive, ceiling, conceit, perceive
• Sounding like A: eight, weight, neighbor, veil, reign
• Exceptions to memorize: weird, seize, leisure, neither, foreign
• Foreign and seize are the most tested exceptions

Double Letter Traps

Many errors happen because aspirants add an extra letter or miss a double letter. For example, acommodate is wrong — it is accommodate (two C's and two M's). These double-letter words are very commonly tested because they look almost right when spelled wrongly.

• Accommodate — two C's and two M's (most tested)
• Occurrence — two C's and two R's
• Embarrass — two R's and two S's
• Necessary — one C and two S's (mnemonic below)
• Recommend — one C and two M's
• Committee — two M's, two T's, two E's
• Aggressive — two G's and two S's

Silent Letter Words

Some letters in English are written but not spoken. Aspirants often spell words the way they sound and get them wrong. Silent letters must be memorized because there is no logic rule — just habit.

• Silent K: knight, kneel, knack, knowledge, knuckle
• Silent B: doubt, debt, subtle, lamb, comb, plumber
• Silent H: honest, heir, hour, vehicle, exhibit
• Silent G: sign, foreign, gnaw, gnarl, campaign
• Silent P: psychology, pneumonia, receipt, psalm
• Receipt is very commonly tested — silent P after C

Suffix and Prefix Spelling Traps

Adding a suffix like -ful, -ness, -ment, -able, -ible often causes errors. A common mistake is writing fullfill instead of fulfill, or usefull instead of useful. The suffix -ful always has one L when added to a word. Similarly, -ible vs -able is a trap — there is no perfect rule but certain words are fixed.

• -ful suffix always has one L: grateful, careful, useful, harmful
• -ible words: possible, responsible, incredible, flexible, visible
• -able words: comfortable, available, acceptable, reliable, adorable
• Disappoint — one S and two P's, not dissappoint
• Unnecessary — one N then double N: un + necessary
• Misspell — one S (mis + spell), not mispell

High Frequency SSC Spelling Words

Based on past SSC papers, certain words come up again and again. These are the ones you must absolutely know before the exam. Review this list and mark the ones you are not confident about.

• Accommodate, Occurrence, Embarrass, Necessary, Recommend
• Separate (not seperate — there is a rat in separate)
• Definitely (not definately — it comes from definite)
• Privilege (not privelege — no second E before L)
• Conscience, Conscientious, Miscellaneous, Bureaucracy
• Perseverance, Exaggerate, Acquaintance, Maintenance

• Writing seperate instead of separate — the most classic error in SSC papers
• Writing accomodate with one M instead of accommodate with two M's and two C's
• Confusing -ible and -able: writing responsable instead of responsible
• Adding double L with -ful suffix: writing usefull or beautifull instead of useful or beautiful
• Forgetting the silent P in receipt and writing reciept — both the silent P and the IE vs EI rule trap you at once

• NECESSARY: one C, two S's — a shirt has one Collar and two Sleeves, just like necessary
• SEPARATE: there is a RAT hiding in sep-a-RAT-e — never write seperate again
• ACCOMMODATE: the hotel can accommodate two Cars and two Motorbikes — two C's and two M's
• I before E except after C: think of a THIEF (thief has IE) — a thief does not go near a COP (ceiling, obtain, perceive use EI after C)
• EMBARRASS: I get Really Red and Super Sweaty — two R's and two S's

• In SSC MTS, spelling questions are considered easy scoring — do not skip them; a 1-minute investment gets you a full mark
• The question almost always uses medium-difficulty words — not basic words like cat or dog, but also not very advanced words; focus on the 30-40 high-frequency words
• When unsure between two options, eliminate clearly wrong spellings first — often two options are obviously wrong and the real confusion is between the remaining two
• Do not rely only on how the word sounds in your head — many errors come from phonetic spelling; always visualize the written word
• Practice by writing the commonly tested words by hand at least once — muscle memory from writing beats just reading the list when you are under exam pressure
