The International Day of Democracy is observed every year on 15 September. It was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997. The first International Day of Democracy was observed in 2008.
