Government Schemes and Policies

SSC CGL frequently asks about newly launched or recently expanded central government schemes. Focus on the ministry behind the scheme, its target beneficiary, and the year of launch or major amendment. Schemes related to housing, health, agriculture, women empowerment, and digital infrastructure are high priority. State schemes rarely appear unless they won a national award or were replicated nationally.

• PM Vishwakarma, PM Surya Ghar, Ayushman Bharat expansion are recent high-frequency topics
• Budget announcements often seed 1 to 2 questions in the exam held that year
• Distinguish between schemes with similar names, for example PM Awas Yojana Urban vs Rural
• Note funding pattern: Centrally Sponsored vs Central Sector schemes
• One Nation One Ration Card, JAM Trinity, and DBT-linked schemes are perennial favourites

Appointments and Constitutional Posts

Questions on who was appointed to which post are almost guaranteed in every SSC CGL paper. Focus on appointments to constitutional bodies, RBI Governor, CAG, CEC, Chief Justice of India, heads of international organisations like UN agencies, WTO, IMF, and leaders of neighbouring countries. Also track appointments of Indian-origin personalities in foreign governments, as these have appeared recently.

• First woman or youngest person to hold a post is a classic trap-question format

Awards, Honours, and Rankings

This is one of the most predictable current affairs categories in SSC CGL. Questions come on Bharat Ratna, Padma awards, Nobel Prizes, Booker Prize, Oscar winners in Indian context, Dadasaheb Phalke, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna), Arjuna Awards, and international recognition of Indian institutions or individuals. Rankings like Global Hunger Index, Press Freedom Index, Ease of Doing Business, and Global Innovation Index also appear.

• Nobel Prize winners across all six categories must be memorised every year
• Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri announced in January, exam follows
• Bharat Ratna is a high-probability question whenever it is awarded
• Oscar Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress especially if India-linked
• India's rank in key indices: GHI, GII, HDI, Press Freedom, Corruption Perception Index
• Booker Prize, Pulitzer, Sahitya Akademi winners are tested

Sports and International Events

SSC CGL tests sports current affairs heavily, especially Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, cricket World Cups, and Chess Olympiad results. India's medal tallies, individual gold medallists, and venues of upcoming major tournaments are important. International summits like G20, BRICS, SCO, ASEAN, and bilateral state visits also generate 1 to 2 questions per paper.

• Bilateral summits: India plus USA, India plus Russia, India plus Japan themes

Defence, Science, and Space

ISRO missions, defence acquisitions, and missile tests are regularly tested. Questions ask about mission objectives, launch vehicles, payload details, and firsts achieved. Defence indigenisation under Atmanirbhar Bharat, new warship inductions, and Exercise names with partner countries also appear. For science, focus on record-breaking discoveries, new species found in India, and WHO or ICMR health alerts.

• New fighter jets, submarines, aircraft carriers inducted into Indian armed forces
• Exercise names: India plus which country, location, what type (air/naval/army)
• DRDO missile tests: name, range, type (ballistic, cruise, hypersonic)
• Space missions by NASA, ESA, JAXA that made global headlines

• Mixing up similar scheme names from different years, for example confusing PM Awas Yojana 1.0 and 2.0 details or attributing a scheme to the wrong ministry
• Memorising the award without the year, then choosing a wrong option when two consecutive years are given as choices
• Studying only national current affairs and ignoring international appointments and summits, which regularly appear in SSC CGL
• Reading current affairs from exam date backwards only 6 months, missing that SSC CGL covers 12 to 18 months before the notification
• Confusing exercise names, for example Tasman Saber is India-Australia but Malabar is India-USA-Japan, leading to wrong answers on bilateral military exercises

• Use the MAPS framework for every news item: Ministry or Body, Appointed person or Awardee, Place or Country, Significance or First. This covers 90 percent of current affairs question formats.
• For Nobel Prizes, remember the order Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace, Economics using the mnemonic Please Clean My Lovely Peaceful Economy.
• For India's key indices, think CHIP: Corruption rank, Hunger rank, Innovation rank, Press freedom rank. India tends to rank poorly in C and P, and moderately in H and I. Any dramatic change is exam-worthy.
• For defence exercises, pair the country with a keyword: Shakti equals France, Indra equals Russia, Tasman Saber equals Australia, Malabar equals USA plus Japan. Make a small table and revise it weekly.

• SSC CGL Tier 1 typically covers events from 12 to 18 months before the official exam notification. If the notification comes in April 2025, events from October 2023 onward are fair game. Do not limit revision to 6 months.
• Approximately 4 to 6 questions come from current affairs out of 25 GK questions. Each correct answer saves you from the 0.5 negative marking trap, so avoid guessing unless you can eliminate 2 options confidently.
• Questions are mostly factual and direct, not analytical. No need to understand why an event happened, just who, what, where, and when. Focus on data points over analysis.
• In recent SSC CGL papers, ISRO missions, Padma award winners, and sports medal events had highest repetition. Prioritise these three categories above all others in current affairs.
• SSC often repeats question formats from previous years with updated data. If GHI rank was asked in CGL 2023, expect a similar question with the latest rank in CGL 2025. Practise identifying these recurring formats in PYQs.
