Series is one of the most reliable scoring topics in SSC CHSL Reasoning. Expect 3 to 5 questions every attempt. Questions ask you to find the missing term, the wrong term, or the next term in a number, letter, or mixed series. The difficulty is light to moderate — if you know the common patterns, you can solve each question in under 40 seconds.

Types of Series You Must Know

SSC CHSL series questions fall into three broad families: Number Series (pure digits), Letter Series (alphabets with position logic), and Mixed or Alphanumeric Series (letters plus numbers together). Within each family, the pattern is always one of a handful of templates. Once you identify the template, the answer is mechanical.

  • Number Series: arithmetic (add/subtract), geometric (multiply/divide), squares, cubes, prime numbers, two-step alternating patterns.

The 5 Most Common Number Series Patterns in CHSL

Roughly 80 percent of CHSL number series questions use only five templates. Memorise these five and you can crack most questions without deep calculation. Always check these in order — start with the simplest (add/subtract) and move to more complex (squares, cubes).

  • Pattern 1 — Constant Difference: 4, 7, 10, 13... (add 3 each time).
  • Pattern 2 — Increasing Difference: differences themselves go up by a fixed number (like 2, 4, 6, 8...).

Do not just look at adjacent pairs — always confirm the rule from the start.

  • Establish pattern from first 3 terms confidently before checking the rest.
  • Squares and cubes series are favourite hiding spots for wrong terms (e.g., 125 replaced by 124).
  • In arithmetic series, calculate all differences and spot the one difference that does not match.
  • If pattern involves multiplication, check each ratio. One ratio will be different.
  • Double-check your suspect term — examiners love placing the wrong term in position 4 or 5.
