Number Series — Core Patterns

A number series follows a hidden rule connecting all terms. Your job is to find that rule and apply it to locate the missing or wrong term. Most RRB NTPC series are based on one or two layered rules, rarely more than two. Start by checking differences between consecutive terms. If differences are not constant, check second-level differences or ratios.

  • Arithmetic Series: Constant difference between terms. e.g. 3, 7, 11, 15 — difference is 4.
  • Geometric Series: Constant ratio between terms. e.g. 2, 6, 18, 54 — ratio is 3.

Letter Series — Position-Based Logic

Each letter in the English alphabet has a position: A=1, B=2, C=3 ... Z=26. Series questions ask you to find the next group of letters or the missing letters. The trick is to find the gap (difference in positions) between corresponding letters across groups. Memorise the alphabet positions of every 5th letter as anchors: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25.

  • Split the series: Write letters separately and numbers separately, then find each rule.
  • Numbers in mixed series are often squares, cubes, or multiples.

Wrong Term in Series

Some questions give a complete series and ask which term is wrong. Do not get confused — the approach is the same. Find the most consistent rule that applies to almost all terms. The one term that breaks the rule is the answer. Check at least 3-4 consecutive terms before declaring a rule.

  • Verify the pattern using 3 terms first before assuming the rule holds.
  • Usually only ONE term is wrong — the rest follow a clean rule.
  • Re-check your arithmetic; calculation errors are the biggest cause of choosing the wrong answer.
  • In letter series wrong-term questions, recount position values carefully.
  • If the series looks like two alternating series, separate odd and even positions and check each.
