Number Series — Core Patterns

A number series follows a hidden rule. Your job is to spot the rule fast. Most SSC GD number series use one of five patterns: addition/subtraction of a fixed number, multiplication/division, squares or cubes, two alternating series, or a combination of operations that increase (like +2, +4, +6 — differences growing by 2 each time).

Letter Series — Core Patterns

In letter series, alphabets move forward or backward by a fixed or changing number of steps. The key skill is remembering the position of each letter (A=1, B=2 ... Z=26). Treat letters like numbers and apply the same number series rules. Many SSC GD questions use skipping patterns or reverse alphabets.

  • Forward skip: A, C, E, G — skip 1 letter each time (A+2=C, C+2=E)
  • Backward series: Z, X, V, T — moving back by 2

A popular SSC GD format — a series is given with one term that does not fit the pattern. You must identify it. Strategy: write down differences or ratios between all consecutive terms. The place where the pattern breaks is near the wrong term. Check if replacing it fixes the rule.
